Life As We Know It

LIFE AS WE KNOW IT…..

Life as we know it is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated;

Life as we know it is to be happy- it’s all matters;

Life as we know it is a dream for the wise, a game for the fool, a comedy for the rich, a tragedy for the poor;

Life as we know it is a crazy ride and nothing is guaranteed;

We do not remember days, we remember moments;

The truth is you don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow;

Throughout life people will make you mad, disrespect you and treat you bad. Let God deal with the things they do, because hate in your heart will consume you too;

Life is a song- sing it;

Life is a game- play it;

Life is a challenge- face it;

Life is a dream- realize it;

Life is a sacrifice- offer it;

Life is love- enjoy it;

LIFE as we know it is all about being you!!

WISH Credits to; the author Syana Azura

Lennon was tired of it. He was tired of being picked on by everyone. He was always the punching bag in school. The other kids kept making jokes about him, putting earthworms and frogs in his locker, hiding his shoes in the changing room and ripping out pages from his books.

He got used to it after a while but sometimes, it was just too much for him to handle, too much for him to tolerate. When his favourite fountain pen was stamped and broken, he broke into tears. It was the only thing he had from his late father, and now it was gone. As he picked up the broken pieces, his small little heart whispered angrily.

“I can’t take it anymore. I’m tired of this. I wish I could be popular. I wish I could be popular so people would stop picking on me.”

He went back home that night with a heavy heart. His mother had prepared his favourite dish – friend salmon with apple pie, but he had no appetite to eat. He took a tiny bite at the dessert, and retired to his room – the only place he could find serenity and peace.
The next morning…
KRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING! KRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!

“Wake up Lennon! It’s almost 7 o’clock! You’re going to be late for school!” his mother shouted from the kitchen.

Lennon opened his eyes lazily, his head in a dizzy state. He made his way to the shower and got himself ready just as the school bus pulled up in front of the house. He climbed up and searched for an empty seat.

“Yo, Lennon!” Drake called out from the back of the bus.

Lennon braced himself for a shower of insults from Drake. Who in the school would not know Drake Bennett and his group of football players? They loved to pick on people like Lennon, and thought that they were the coolest group in the school.

“Come here and sit with us! We saved you the best seat, next to Renee!”

Lennon was just about to counter his insult, but stopped his tongue just in time. He could not believe what he was hearing. Was Drake Bennett really offering him a seat? Next to Renee Yale, the cheerleader captain? Was he still dreaming, or was it all reality?

“Hey, Lennon! What are you waiting for? Come here dude!” Drake’s friend, Joshua shouted out.

“What? Me? Sitting with you guys? Are you guys sure?”

“Why wouldn’t you sit with us, we’re a team, man, remember? We’re brothers! Just sit here!” Drake said, pointing to the empty seat next to Renee.

“Lennon, darling, are you okay dear?” said Renee.

“Err…”

Lennon walked to the back of the bus in a haze, trying to register what was happening. Here he was, joining Drake’s gang, being offered a seat next to Renee, and being called Darling by Renee, the crush of his life? I must be dreaming, he told himself, and pinched himself on the thigh.

Ouch! Okay, definitely not dreaming… But how could this ever come true? Lennon thought, and suddenly he remembered his wish the day before. Is this really coming true? My wish to become popular is finally fulfilled!

He took quite some time to adjust himself to the new popularity. For the first time in his life, people are finally noticing him, not as a laughing stock, but as one of the most popular boy in the school. Girls were fighting over each other to get a lunch date with him, while the guys kept asking him to join them for football.

This is just too good to be true, Lennon thought as he put his arms around Renee, his new sweetheart. He could not believe his luck. First, he got his wish to be popular. Second, he got his dream girl to go out with him. And third, he did not even have to do anything to get all of these, since it all came to him.

Hanging out with Drake gave a bad influence to Lennon. Through Drake, Lennon had started to experiment with cigarettes and drugs. They always skip classes to go to the cyber cafes to play computer games. He had also started to lie to his mother, asking her for money to fulfil his addiction.

A few weeks passed, and it was time for the end of school examinations. Lennon was scared as he knew he did not prepare anything for the examination. When Drake realized how nervous Lennon was, he pulled him aside.

“Hey, Lennon, why are you so scared?”

“I haven’t prepared anything for the exams! I don’t even pay attention in class! I’m so going to flunk this exam!”
Lennon answered, covering his face in shame.

“Hey, hey, hey, relax brother! Relax. That’s why you have us with you. We’re brothers, remember? And we stick by your side. Let me share with you our secret to success, the reason why we always pass our exams even though we didn’t do any work,” Drake said.

He leaned in and whispered something to Lennon’s ear. Lennon’s eyes grew bigger as he hear the secret, and his initial response was a big No-No.

“I’m not going to cheat! Never!” Lennon said firmly.

“Well, that’s your choice. But if you fail, don’t say I didn’t warn you
,” Drake said, shrugging his arms. He walked away, leaving Lennon deep in thought.

“Should I? I would fail if I didn’t, but I wouldn’t have to cheat if I have at least prepare for this exam. Hmmm. Okay, I’ll cheat, just this once. After this, I’ll study, I promise,” he said to himself. He called Drake over and told him his agreement. Drake nodded with joy.

“Okay, here’s what you have to do…” Drake whispered intensely, and Lennon tried to remember every single thing Drake asked him to do. “Got it?”

“Got it, I think…”

“Okay, so you go now. We’ll wait by the back door of the office. The teachers would be in the meeting room, so the coast is clear!”

Lennon entered the teachers’ common room, and his eyes scanned the room for the stack of examination papers. There is was, standing tall on Mr Palmer’s desk. He went nearer and went through the papers. He was so busy that he did not realize the door opening and Mr Johnson coming in.

“Lennon? What are you doing here?”

“Mr Johnson!” he turned around, startled, and dropped the question paper that was in his hands.

“Aren’t those, your exam papers for next week?”

“I can explain sir…” Lennon was at a loss for words.

“You can explain to the principal. You better follow me now,”
said Mr Johnson sternly. Lennon followed glumly.
********************************************************
Lennon was suspended for two months for attempting to cheat. While at home, his mother kept an eagle eye on him, making sure that he did not get involved in any suspicious activities. As he sat in his room, he thought of his wish again.

If only I knew being popular would mean ending up like this, I’d rather be the old me. I was much more responsible and matured back then,” he said to himself, regrett

A Peek into Personal Finance Management by : Tan Ling Han

On the 26th of November 2014, a finance management seminar organized by AKPK was held in UM. Mr. Siven was the speaker for the evening and he shared some information about personal finance management.

            Did you know that 67 bankruptcies were filed every day in 2014? Most bankrupts are those in their mid-30s and 40s. Imagine a life of debt and misery that has befallen upon them their relatively young life but how did they come to such a situation? Another frightening statistic is the fact that Malaysia has the highest household debts in the whole of South East Asia. These statistics serves to show that poor personal finance management is a big reason as to why many Malaysians are in debt.

However, the number one factor that causes people to get dragged into debt in the first place is medical reasons. Getting sick is inevitable for all of us but exactly when and where is still an unconceivable part of the future. The uncertainty element is one that scares many but most people are still hesitant to be prepared for the worst. The lack of an emergency fund is the key reason why they cannot cope with this sudden efflux of money. This is where AKPK comes into place as they offer financial education, financial counselling and finance management programs.

Financial planning is one of the most effective ways of acquiring and maintaining healthy finance. Budgeting and tracking cash flow can reduce expenses and the risk of overspending which will eventually cause one to end up in debt. Saving is also part of financial planning and the speaker recommends monthly savings of up to 30% of one’s nett income. This is apart from the emergency fund that should amount to 3- 6 months salary. The lack of discipline and initiative to save will inevitably and eventually lead a person into financial crisis.

             Mr Siven also warned about the danger posed by scams and. People are very likely to become victims of these swindles as they wish to attain any easy access to wealth. Just like Skim Cepat Kaya and the Geneva gold scheme, bad investments and greed are the main factors of financial crisis. We were advised to be very careful when investing as the number of swindlers is very high. Another kind of bad investment is the purchase of expensive things that depreciates very fast. For example, investing in cars is a very bad investment strategy as cars’ value drops very fast. Proton Tiara is a shiny example of poor investing as the value of the car now is only a few hundred ringgit and has very expensive spare parts. Having a car is a necessity nowadays, but buying an expensive car that will last longer is the wise thing to do.

As a conclusion, start your financial plan now by having a budget, tracking cash flow, saving part of your monthly allowance and avoiding bad investments. No one is too rich to not manage their wealth and no one is too poor to plan their finances. It is not the amount of money that counts as the path to wealth lies in the way we manage it.

BERLARI

BERLARI

Kemegahan dan kegemilangan,

Tanpa kita sedar,

Kau terus berlari,

Bagi mencapai impian itu.

Lalu engkau lupa, siapa yang dibelakang.

ABORTION- AN INSIGHT INTO SECTION 312 OF THE PENAL CODE

Abortion is defined as the artificial or spontaneous termination of a pregnancy before the embryo or foetus can survive on its own outside a woman’s uterus whereas safe abortions were defined as those that meet legal requirements in countries with liberal laws, or where laws are liberally interpreted such hat safe abortions are generally available.  However, in Malaysia the law on abortion would not enable one to terminate pregnancy as wished as our laws only permits abortion under certain circumstances that will be further discussed below.

The original the law on abortion in Malaysia stated that abortion can only be carried out to save the woman’s life and if the abortion is not performed for that purpose, the doer shall be punished with imprisonment of up to three years and fine or both. In the event which the woman is quick which child, the doer will then be imprisoned up to seven years and be liable to fine or both. Quickening happens at different periods of pregnancy in different women but the time duration is usually about the 15th or 16th week after conception.

Amendment was made in the year of 1989 to extend the section to allow medical practitioners who are of the opinion that the pregnancy might bring upon injury to the mental or physical health of the women.  This amendment to the law allows pregnancy to be terminated in the event which the pregnancy brings harm the mental health of the mother, namely depression or trauma that might arise from unwelcomed sexual intercourse.

According to Parliamentary debates, as recorded in the parliamentary debates, the change of law was initiated by Dato’ Dr Siti Zaharah who was one of the Deputy Ministers at the Prime Minister’s Office. She proposed that it’s essential that amendments are made to the law due to a rapid rise in sexual offences, whereby in 1988, there were 611 rape cases as opposed to only 368 cases in 1980. The increase in the percentage of the offences lead to a rise in the number of victims suffering from those malicious, sex offences. Hence, she proposed that it would wise to revise the act in order to protect the rights of victims suffering from the crime to improve to quality of their lives after the painful occurrences.

As per the case of Public Prosecutor v Dr Nadason, the accused’s patient, was found to be pregnant and had enlarged varicose veins. The accused gave her a saline injection, and a foetus was aborted. The accused gave evidence that he performed the abortion in good faith to save the life of the woman. However, it was held the accused had not given reasonable thought and had not taken enough steps to examine the woman further. He was imposed a fine of RM 3500 and was imprisoned for four months.   It is hereby evident that the law of Malaysia strictly permits the usage of the liberty of Section 312 of the Penal Code only when the life of the woman is endangered and if there is a possibility that termination may be avoided, it would mean that the code has been violated.

Although abortion is unlawful in Malaysia, abortion is allowed upon request during the first 24 weeks of pregnancy in Singapore. Legal abortion is restricted to Singapore citizens, spouse of Singapore citizens and women that have resided in Singapore for a minimum duration of four months.  Before 1969, abortion legislation in Singapore was derived from British law and abortion was permitted if it was carried out with good faith to save the life of the pregnant woman.  The law enacted requires consent of the women if she is married and consent from parents of unmarried women under age of 18. The Abortion Act 1974 further liberalizes Singapore’s abortion law as the act says that no one can be found guilty of an offence under the law relating to abortion when a pregnancy is terminated by a registered doctor acting on the request of a pregnant women with her written consent.  Mandatory counselling is carried out but it is not applicable to certain women, namely foreigners, rape victims, those who passed PSLE or those who have three or more children.

    Abortion is legal in England, Wales and Scotland when two registered doctor certify that the situation meets the requirements set in Abortion Act 1967. The consent of spouse is not required.  However the Abortion Act of 1967 permits abortion if two registered doctor are of the opinion of the pregnancy might harm the mother physically or mentally or the child might be born with abnormalities. Counselling for mother is provided but is not mandatory.

In present times as it was it the past, many people are not aware of the amendments that have been made to Section 312 of the Penal Code. Yet, the access to affordable, safe abortions remains a huge issue in Malaysia, even for those women who satisfy the legal criteria for abortions.  People still believe that abortion is totally illegal and they opt to undergo abortion secretly in private clinics. It has been reported that obstetrics and gynaecology clinics in Klang Valley charge between 1200 Ringgit Malaysia to 2500 Ringgit Malaysia for abortion service.  Many private clinics give the impression that abortion is illegal without saying those actual words with the intention to exploit people with high charges. Dr. Choong Sim Poey said that there was lack of awareness of the provision of section 312 of the Penal Code in the society and some doctors were making use of their discretion to overcharge.  Public misconception with the misrepresentation of the media has contributed in the skyrocketing charges on abortion service by some doctors. In a survey conducted by RRAAM showed that out of 120 doctors and nurses, 43% of them responded incorrectly about the legalities of abortion in Malaysia.

Most Malaysian are against abortion as the mainstream religions of Malaysia do not support the act of pregnancy termination. For example, Islam regards abortions carried out after four months of pregnancy as “haram” as Muslims are of the belief that the foetus has become a living soul by them. Buddhism does not support abortion as well because it violates one of the five perceptions of virtue, which is do not kill. Abortion, in the view of a Buddhist, is considered as a form of murder and it may still be seen as a deed with negative moral or karmic consequences. In the Holy Bible of Christian, the Hebrew word yeled is usually used to refer to children - a child, a boy, etc. but in Exodus 21:22, it is used of a child in the womb. Therefore, a foetus, in the view of Christianity, should

     As a conclusion, the fact that Malaysian apparently has a little known provision that allows for abortions under certain circumstances, even though it is subjected to a clause which qualifies the legality of the abortion, means that no matter what opinions one may have of the ministers of parliament, the lawmakers have already put in place a system that allows women access to safe and affordable abortions under certain circumstances. However, the execution of the law is not entirely complete. Many women went for unsafe abortion in private clinic because there is no abortion service accessible in government hospital, especially for those who did not meet the requirement of legal abortion under the provision. For example, teenage girl who was pregnant due to pre-marital sex usually go for unsafe abortion in private clinic or even lead to the issue of baby-dumping. However, further legalizing abortion in Malaysia may require more effort to be made as most of the Malaysian is still against abortion.
